In our Home Group we have just embarked on a study of the Book of Hebrews and in order to take a fresh look we are using the Passion translation.
Here is an exert from Chapter 1: Jesus, the Language of God Throughout history God has spoken to our ancestors by his prophets in many different ways. The revelation he gave them was only a fragment at a time, building one truth upon another. But to us living in these last days, God now speaks to us openly in the language of a Son, the appointed heir of everything, for through him God created the panorama of all things and all time. The Son is the dazzling radiance of God's splendour, the exact expression of God's true nature-his mirror image! He holds the universe together and expands it by the mighty power of his spoken word. He accomplished for us the complete cleansing of sins and then took his seat on the highest throne at the right hand of the majestic One. The word prophets is linked to the Hebrew word nabiy which consists of four Hebrew letter: Noon, Bet, Yood & Alef. A great deal has been written about the meaning of this word, so to keep it simple let us focus on this definition: "a person authorised to speak for another". One approach to studying Hebrew word pictures is to look for other words within the word. In this case there are two words within nabiy; they are Where? (Alef, Yood) Son (Noon Bet). So, could it be that throughout history God was authorising the prophets to pose the question: "where is the Son?!" But now: John 1:14 ...the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. To me this speaks to the very heart of how we are to experience Life In The Row Boat. In our Home Group our friend Sandy shared that she had actually been involved in a rowing eight at school and the fact is that unless you are in the first position in the boat you cannot see the Coxswain clearly. Therefore, your focus must be on the voice of the Coxswain!!!! Our experience in life is that often we cannot see where the Son (our Coxswain) is, in a given situation, sometimes because the heads of our fellow rowers are blocking our view. But rest assured the Son (our Coxswain) is the Word become flesh and He is speaking, so keep asking the question: 'where is the voice of the Son' and keep turning the dial until you tune into His voice, remembering that it His voice that keeps us all trusting and obeying (rowing) in rhythm.

Hey Richard, nice one. Yesterday I found about 30 references in the OT to 'walk in + obedience' I think now it should be 'row in obedience' :) Trisha
